"I try to portray the sudden violence I suffered, the uprooting of everything I had built up over 45 years of dedication to my people".
Rashid Diab
Born in 1957 in Wad-Medani (Sudan), Dr. Rashid Diab discovered his passion for painting at an early age. After studying at the College of Fine Arts in Khartoum, he was awarded a scholarship to continue his training in Spain. At the Complutense University of Madrid, he developed an interest in both painting and engraving.
His doctorate, defended in 1991, focused on traditional and contemporary Sudanese art. He taught in Spain for several years before returning to Sudan in 1999, where he founded the Dara Art Gallery and later the Rashid Diab Arts Centre to promote artistic creation and education.
When war broke out in Khartoum in April 2023, Rashid Diab was forced to flee to Spain, leaving behind all his belongings and so many years of his life, but taking with him his experiences and his desire to continue painting to give voice to the tragedy his country was going through.
