Déclinaisons
OBOU GBAIS -
The Dan Mask is emblematic of western traditions in Ivory Coast, where Obou comes from. He paints this Mask as much as he wears it. Those faces with long chins and almond-shaped eyes, represented in crowd scenes or portraits, are his trademark, his artistic identity.
With "Déclinaisons", Obou Gbais presents five new series of unpublished drawings. Little by little, the Dan mask becomes more subtle, blending into its wearer's face but never disappearing.
"Déclinaisons" marks Obou Gbais' move towards realism. His clean lines can also be complex, and Obou knows how to play with shadows as well as flat colors. The latter, which are always shimmering, accompany his resolutely contemporary universe, yet give a special place to his ancestors' traditions. The artworks can also be consulted at the Gallery on request.

2023Obou Gbais fuses the lines of the mask with those of the face. The skin's texture and that of the wood blend until they become one. Elodie and Fatima don't wear the mask, they embody it, and through it reflect the Dan identity, for all to see as well as within themselves.
